Williams leads Yellow Jackets past Berea 62-33

Greer outscores Bulldogs to go to 2-0 on young season...

The Greer Yellow Jackets exploded for 62 points on Thursday night at Berea to defeat a determined Bulldog team by the score of 62-33. Senior quarterback Efferlyn Williams posted some gaudy offensive stats, falling just 21 yards short in passing to reach both 200 yards rushing & passing in a game. He also scored two touchdowns & threw for two more in his first start under center for Greer. Williams, who transfered into the Greer district late last school year from Maryland most likely has now established himself as the starting QB for the Jackets. He had exited fall camp as the #2 QB, slightly trailing Josh Wilson. And while Wilson himself has been very solid, Williams has raised the bar on his game exponentially.

The Jackets took a quick & early lead in the game in just 1:35 off the clock. It was a 5 play, 70 yard drive as Williams took it in from 5 yards. Ross Robison's PAT made it 7-0. Berea would tie it up a posession later on a 17 yard run by bruising RB Davion Gambrell, but the tie would only last seconds when Dominique Parks took a handoff and raced 64 yards to make it 14-7. The lead would stretch to 21-7 on Williams 45 yard pass to Matt Holliday. On the ensuing kickoff, Berea fumbled and Greer made them pay, with Parks scoring again from 3 yards out capping a 46 yard drive. That would be the last play of the night for Parks, as he had sustained a concussion earlier in the quarter. His status is day to day. Berea would come to within 28-14 the Jackets before intermission on an 80 yard pass play to Davon Dickey from QB Zach Reeves.

After halftime the scoring ramped up. On the Jackets 1st posession of the half they went 60 yards in 10 plays and Dakari Sitton scored from 3 yards to make it 35-14. After a Matt Holliday INT, sophomore tailback Jonathan Winter scored on an 8 yard run in his first ever varsity carry. WIth the score 42-14, the two teams would trade touchdowns like playing cards the next 10 minutes. Berea scored on plays of 83, 30, & 31 yards, while Greer scored on a Williams 57 yard run, a 52 yard pass to Thomas Simmons, and with 2:16 to play, a fierce 20 yard run by Josh Wilson on which he gave a piggy back ride to several Bulldog defenders into the end zone making the final score 62-33. The Steve's Corner Stop Players of the Game were on offense, of course Williams with his 200+ yards rushing and 179 yards passing. On defense Darius Murray got the nod as the top defender in a game where there really wasn't a lot of defensive highlights. In all the two teams combined for 95 points and well over 1000 total yards.

Coach Will Young was happy to get the win, but when asked about the performance wasn't impressed. "We really didn't play that well on either side of the ball. 62 points is good for sure, but even on offense we had costly penalites, we had dropped balls. Eff would have easily gotten that 200 yards passing if we just catch it. And on defense, well thats not the way Greer High plays defense, and we're sure not going to start playing it that way now. But hey, we're 2-0 and we've got some things to work on, and we sure will work on them to get ready for Byrnes."

The Jackets now turn their attention to the Rebels, who came into the season ranked #1 nationally and are also 2-0 on the season. Broadcast time on WPJM AM-800 will be 6:00 PM for the BB&T Yellow Jacket Tailgate Show and the kickoff between Greer & it's oldest rival will be at 7:30. Greer last defeated Byrnes in 2000 on the road at Nixon Field by the score of 28-27. The game can also be heard anywhere around the world from this web site. So wear you Greer gear, bring your headset and come support the Jackets as they face the Byrnes Rebels next Friday night!
