![]() The Greer Yellow Jackets would see their run in the state 3A playoffs falter tonight against the Pickens Blue Flame. The visitors jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks to a couple of hits and an untimely Greer error. The bottom of the inning saw the Yellow Jackets get runners on first and second base but failed to score. Greer starter Taylor Johnson would settle down over the next four innings, retiring 11 of the next 13 batters, but would run into trouble in the top of the sixth inning. The leadoff hitter sent a line drive off the leg of Johnson, he would move to second on a wild pitch and come in to score on a single to left center field. The Blue Flame would tack on another run on a RBI hit off the top of the right field fence. Trailing 3-0, the Jackets were unable to get momentum going in their last two at-bats. They will now host Daniel on Friday at 7:00 p.m. in a elimination game. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Senior Taylor Johnson helped Greer end their two game conference losing streak as they defeated Union County, 3-2 on Friday night. The recent Erskine signee, Johnson got the complete game win giving up only two runs on four hits. The home town Yellow Jackets got on the scoreboard in the opening inning when they scored two runs. Leadoff batter Austin Phillips got the inning started with a double on the first pitch of the game and came around to score on the Jeff Witt RBI single to left. Witt would later cross the plate on a Daniel Palka RBI single. The Jackets had a chance to make it a big inning as the Union County pitcher gave up 3 walks but got out of the jam with a strikeout. Greer would add another run in the 4th inning as Palka got his second hit of the night with a double to left center field. With him standing on third base now, Bryan Carroll laid down the RBI bunt that allowed Palka to score on the squeeze play. It proved to be the game winning run as Union County scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning on a homerun deep to left field. The two-run homerun was the only mistake that Johnson made on the evening to the visiting Yellow Jackets. Following that hit, he retired 7 of the next 9 hitters, allowing two walks but would strike out four of the last five hitters. Greer improves to 4-3 in conference play and will now travel to Columbia to participate in a tournament over the spring break. Congratulations to the Jackets! Greer Leaders Daniel Palka 2-3, RBI Jeff Witt 2-4, run Austin Phillips 1-2, run ![]() Shaffer leads Yellow Jackets over Generals… ![]() In a conference game that went back and forth for most of the game, Greer first baseman Zach Shaffer put the game away for the home team in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wade Hampton scored first in the top of the second inning after a double, a passed ball and then a sacrifice fly. Greer came right back in the bottom half to tie the score at 1-1 as Taylor Johnson led off with a walk, moved to second on a Daniel Palka sacrifice and scored on an RBI single by Zach Shaffer. The Generals would retake the lead in the third only to see the home team tie it once again in the fifth. Brad Holliday took a leadoff walk, stole second base and later came in on a passed ball by the catcher. Austin Ashmore singled to start the sixth inning, moved the second base on a wild pitch and would come around to give the Yellow Jackets the 3-2 lead on a Johnson RBI single. With Johnson on third base, Shaffer stepped to the plate and drove the 1-1 pitch over the right field fence. The two-run homerun extended the Jackets lead to 5-2 and gave him 3 RBIs on the night. Junior left-hander Jeff Witt would get the win as he went 6 innings, allowed only 1 earned run and stuck out 7 batters. Palka would come in and get the save in the seventh, striking out 3 of the 4 batters he faced. Greer improves to 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the Peach Blossom. Head Coach Bob Massullo was happy to get the win at home, "We just continued to fight tonight and were able to get timely hits. This is a very tough region and our kids have to come ready to play every game." Wren got on the board in the top of the second inning thanks to three consecutive hits and took a 3-0 lead. Greer (4-2) was quiet through the first two innings but threatened in the bottom of the 3rd as Austin Phillips singled, then back to back walks to Austin Ashmore and Daniel Palka set them up with bases loaded and 2 outs but a perfect pitch from the Wren pitcher ended the threat. After escaping the Yellow Jackets, the visitors struck once again on a 2-run homerun over the left field fence and took a 5-0 lead. Greer would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the 5th when Ashmore led off with a double, Palka was hit by a pitch and Taylor Johnson delivered an RBI double to the left field gap. They would load the bases once again but was only able to score one run in the inning. Greer was able to muster another run in their last at-bat after a walk and a single with an error on the right fielder that allowed Johnson to score. The Yellow Jackets can not hang their heads as they will step right into Peach Blossom Conference action tomorrow as the Eastside Eagles come to visit. After a succesful two-sport career as a Greer High Yellow Jacket, Taylor Johnson will be playing on the collegiate level in Due West, SC as a member of the Erskine College Flying Fleet. Johnson committed recently to play baseball for the Fleet. He played both football & baseball at Greer. He was a three year starter at quarterback for the football team, and has played baseball four season for Bob Massulo's team. During his time as a Yellow Jacket, Johnson has been a big part of a steady rise for the Jackets to become one of the top programs in the state. Ashmore verbally committed to Coach Ray Tanner and the Gamecocks last spring but made it official today.
