The Greer boys will end 2011 in memorable fashion after knocking off #2 ranked and previously unbeaten Eastside, 61-59, in the championship game of the 2011 FCA Christmas Classic. Yellow Jacket junior forward LaBrian Shiflet (Tournament MVP) not only scored 33 points but hit the game winning 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead to begin the game but the tournament hosts Jackets battled back to trail 13-11 after the first quarter.

The teams went back and forth for most of the second quarter as Dre Terry, who along with D'Ante Fleming was named to All-Tournament team, kept Greer close scoring 9 of his 13 points in the quarter. Eastside held a 29-26 halftime lead and was able to stretch their lead slightly heading in the final quarter leading 41-37. Shiflet, would score 15 points when Greer needed it the most, especially after they trailed 59-58 with 1.7 seconds remaining following two Eagle free throws. DaQuan Thomas inbounded the ball to Shiflet and two dribbles later he launched a shot from some 35 feet away that hit only the bottom of the net for the game winner.

This was the sixth time these two teams had met in the championship game of this tournament in its fourteen year history and the third time facing each other this year with Eastside having won the previous two meetings.

Congratulations to the Yellow Jackets! They will begin conference play on January 10th when they travel to Chapman.

The 2011-12 varsity basketball season began for both the boys and girls teams as they participated in preseason tournaments. The boys took part in the Southside Christian Academy Invitational and came away with a 2-1 record (lost to Dorman and beat Broome, Southside Christian).

The girls team hosted the Yellow Jacket Invitational at Phillips Gymnasium. After beating Greenville Tech Charter in the first game, they fell to Eastside and Wade Hampton.
