The 2005 AAA State Champions!

Jackets bring home AAA State Championship!!
.
Greer gets 100-97 victory over Lake Marion to win title....

The Greer Yellow Jackets are State Champions! Greer won it's first championship since 1978 with the win, and gave Greer Head Coach Jeff Neely his first State Championship as well in front of 14,000 fans at the Colonial Center. Greer was led by All-State senior guard Chad Cartwright's 31 points.

The Jackets came out gunning, with a fast and furious pace, but led by three, at 22-19 at the end of the first period. Treal Davis scored 12 points during the stanza for the Jackets. With Greer leading by one midway through the 2nd quarter, Cartwright scored 10 straight points, spurred by three straight steals, and Greer led by 13, at 50-37 at the half.

Greer would stretch the lead to 21 late in the 3rd at 74-53, again aided by great defense, and strong board play by Davis. But Lake Marion would never go away. They had an All-State guard of their own in O'Tey Sellers, and he began catching fire. Sellers poured in 35 points, many of which came down the stretch. The Gators got within one point at 93-92 with 1:21 to play, then Marquis Coleman hit an eight footer to make it 95-92. After a defensive stop LaRon Dendy hit a pair of free throws to make it a five point game. In the final minute, Coleman would make one of two, and Cartwright made a pair of free throws to seal the win. Cartwright becomes the first Yellow Jacket since the 1950's to win both a football and a basketball State Championship as a starter. Dendy, a 6'8" sophomore, scored 25 points, while Coleman added 20, and Davis had 13. Cartwright said although the game got close, the Jackets would not be denied. "We were going to win this thing. This was a fun team, and it feels so good to bring another championship back to Greer".

Coach Jeff Neely was also proud of his team. "I can't say enough about this team. We were picked fourth in our region, but you know, things just started clicking for us in the middle of the conference race. You know, I just had a good feeling about this all week. I prayed for these guys every day of this season. We are so blessed to have so many great kids here at Greer. We were like family, and it showed. Lake Marion was a great team. They were defending State Champions, and we knew they'd make their run. But our guys didn't buckle. They found a way to close it out. I just want to thank all the fans who made this game in Columbia feel like a home game for us."

So congratulations to Coach Neely & the Greer Yellow Jackets, who finish the season with a 22-6 record and the AAA State Championship!

STATE BOUND! Jackets too much for Red Raiders, 80-66
The Greer Yellow Jackets will face the Lake Marion Gators on Saturday night for 3A State Title at the Colonial Center!
Tip at 8:30 on Saturday night....

It was without a doubt one of the most highly anticipated matchups in a long time tonight as Greer met the Greenville Red Raiders in the Upper State Final. The capacity crowd inside A.C Duckett Gymnasium did not have to wait very long for action. Chad Cartwright set up LeRon Dendy for a opening slam off the backboard to give the Jackets the early 2-0 lead. However, Marcus Boswell, who scored 21 potins, came out blazing for the Red Raiders as he connected on 3 straight 3-pointers in the first quarter. The Red Raiders were able to get out to a 13-8 lead midway through the first period. However, the Jackets went on a 11-0 run to close out the quarter and lead 19-13.

Both teams traded baskets for most of the second quarter but Greenville was only able to get to within four points. Cartwright hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Jackets a 36-27 lead headed into the locker room at halftime.

The second half belonged solely to Greer as they stretched the lead out to 16 points, 56-40, with under two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Dendy had the magic touch tonight as he connected on 4 shots from outside the paint and was dominant on the boards as well.

The Jackets, who were only eight minutes away from their first trip to Columbia since 1995, came out to begin the final quarter and continued to play hard on the offensive end but it was their defense for most of the night that was so impressive. Kent Giguere, who was averaging over 15 points per game before tonight, was held to only 1 point due Marquis Coleman's smothering defense.

Greer had their biggest lead of the night at 18 points with under 5 minutes remaining. Greenville was able to capitalize on a couple of Jacket miscues and get within 10 points with two minutes to go. However, just a he began the game with a slam, LeRon Dendy ended it with a powerful reverse jam at the buzzer to send the Jackets to Columbia on Saturday night.

Dendy's 30 points led Greer, Cartwright had 21 and Raul Samuel added 11 in the victory.

Following the game Head Coach Jeff Neely had this thought. "Our guys came out tonight with so much intensity and played a great game. The electricity inside the gym was tremendous. We look forward to representing the Upper State next Saturday in Columbia."

Greer will face Lake Marion on Saturday Night at the Colonial Center at 8:30 p.m. Lake Marion defeated Lake City 87-82 in overtime. We need EVERYONE to follow the Jackets to Columbia and help them bring home the State Title!! However, if you can not make the trip, tune into WPJM 800 AM for all the exciting action. Air time will be 8:15 on the Yellow Jacket Sports Network.

GOOOOOOOO YELLOW JACKETS!!!

Greer rolls into Upstate Finals with win over Union
Jackets victorious over Union 90-78 to face Greenville Saturday night at 7 PM at Hillcrest High

The Greer High Yellow Jackets came out smoking Tuesday night and advanced on to the Upper State Championship game by defeating the Union Yellow Jackets by the score of 90-78 at Phillips Arena. Spurred on by a large crowd, Greer ended the 1st quarter with a 25-12 lead behind Chad Cartwright's 13 points. The Jackets got the game going their way with a high tempo pace. Union had wanted to keep the game at a much slower, half court pace.

Union, which dominated the boards, would make a couple of runs to make the game interesting, could never get closer than six points. Greer opened their largest lead at 65-44 late in the third period with a dominant run, only to see Union go on a 10-1 run of their own to claw back in it. After Greer stretched the lead back to 17, Union would cut the lead to 76-70 with 2:06 remaining. But the Jackets closed it out with a 12-6 finish to get the 90-78 win. Chad Carwright led all scorers with a career best 37 points, and LaRon Dendy had 23. Marquis Coleman added 11, and played another tremendous defensive game on Union's Josh Pitt. Greer is now 20-6 on the season.

They now advance to play Greenville, who knocked off Clover 54-53 on Tuesday. The game will be played at 7:00 PM at Hillcrest High School in Simpsonville.

Jackets get 65-58 win to host Union on Tuesday at 7:00.....

Greer faced a huge test as they went on the road to face one of Greenville County's best programs Friday night. Mann, seeded #1 from the tough Peach Blossom Conference had a raucus crowd in their favor as well, but the Yellow Jackets stood the test and came away with perhaps one of their biggest wins in the last four seasons with a 65-58 win over the Patriots.

Mann led 25-24 at halftime in a low scoring, intense game. After the half, the Jackets began to ease ahead, and led 55-51 with 3 1/2 minutes to play. Down the stretch, Chad Carwright was 8-8 from the free throw line, as Greer now advances to play fellow Enoree River Conference member Union Tuesday night at Phillips Arena. Union hit a last second shot to win on the road over the Seneca Bobcats.

Cartwright led the Jackets in scoring with 16, but three others were in double figures. Treal Davis had 13, LaRon Dendy 12, and Marquis Coleman had 10. Coach Jeff Neely gave huge credit to the defensive play of Coleman, as he was assigned to guard All-State and Furman signee Tony Anderson. Anderson was held to just 12 points, far off his average. "I'm very excited for, and happy for our team. I'm hoping for a great crowd on Tuesday at home to try & keep this thing going." Jamar Dean & Raul Samuel also scored six apiece for the Jackets.

Lady Jackets finish season with loss to Eau Claire

Greer rallies, but can't overcome early deficit in 72-63 loss....

The Greer High Lady Yellow Jacket basketball team finished a very succesful 2004-5 season Monday night with a tough loss to the Eau Claire Shamrocks at Phillips Arena. The Lady Jackets fell behind by 20 points, but refused to quit. In fact, they rallied to within 5 points of the lead on a couple of occasions, but could not get any closer.

Junior guard Courtney Hawkins once again had a highlight game, scoring 30 points, including a remarkable 18-16 from the free throw line. Hawkins finsished the season connecting on 35 straight free throws. Over her last five games, Courtney was 57-61 from the free throw line. Also, senior Kendal Boyter capped a fine career with the Jackets hitting four three pointers to finish with 14 points. Kendal hit 13 threes in her last three games for Greer. Sophomore Ashley Williams had 10 points for Greer.

Boyter and Tenia Cohen are the only two seniors for Greer, who were maybe not expected to have the kind of team they did this year after graduating five senoirs from a #1 ranked 28-1 team. The #9 ranked Lady Jackets finish the season with a 16-7 record, as they ended up in 2nd place in the Enoree River Conference. This was also a season in which Head Coach Carlton Greene won his 100th career game at the helm of the Lady Jackets. One could argue despite last season's success, that this might have been his finest coaching job. At any rate, the future again looks bright!

Congratulations to Kendal Boyter & Tenia Cohen for great careers with the Lady Jackets!
